Show Don't Tell: Matthew 13:1-9

As the sun dipped low over the shimmering waters of the Sea of Galilee, a gentle breeze rustled the tall grasses along the shore. Jesus, with the warmth of the day still embracing him, climbed into a small wooden boat—its paint chipped and sun-bleached from many a voyage. The crowd, a living tapestry of curiosity and need, pressed closer, their eyes fixed on him, eager to absorb his wisdom.

“Listen!” he called out, his voice rising above the lapping waves. “A farmer went out to sow his seeds.” Picture him now, a rugged man named Eli, with calloused hands that had worked the earth all his life. He flung seeds wide, each tiny kernel a promise of life. As he scattered the seed, you could almost hear the soft thud of it hitting the ground.

Some seeds landed on the hardened path, trodden down by countless feet—unyielding and barren. In an instant, sharp beaks of hungry birds swooped down, snatching away the hope of growth. Others found their resting place on rocky soil, only to sprout quickly, fueled by the promise of rain. But oh, feel the sun’s unrelenting heat at noon! Without deep roots, those fledgling shoots withered, lifeless against the relentless sky.

Then there were the seeds that nestled among thorns—good soil, yes, but fiercely contested. The thorns towered, growing tall and strong, choking out the very life they sought to nurture. But then, in a moment of divine beauty, some seeds landed on the rich, dark earth, unencumbered and free. These seeds took root—deep and strong—thriving under the careful gaze of the Creator. Watch as they multiplied—thirty, sixty, even a hundredfold!
