Show Don't Tell: Matthew 13:47-52
Imagine a warm summer evening by the shimmering waters of Lake Galilee, the sun dipping low on the horizon, casting golden hues across the undulating waves. Picture a group of fishermen, their hands roughened by years of toil, casting out their massive dragnet into the depths of the lake. As the net slices through the water, it captures everything in its path, swirling with life and possibility.
When they finally pull the net ashore, the air is thick with anticipation. The fishermen, breathless and exhilarated, haul in their bounty—colorful fish wriggling, splashing, and flopping about, each one a unique creation of God. With practiced hands, they sort through the catch, placing the shimmering, healthy fish into woven baskets, while tossing the smaller, unfit ones back onto the shore—a vivid scene of separation that resonates deeply.
In this moment, the words of Jesus echo in our hearts: “This is how it will be at the end of the age.” The imagery is stark, a reminder of the final sorting that awaits us all. Imagine angels descending, their wings whispering like the gentle breeze, separating the righteous from the wicked, the faithful from the unfaithful. The reality of judgment looms, with the haunting promise of weeping and gnashing of teeth for those who choose to turn their backs on grace.
Yet, amidst this sobering truth, Jesus offers hope. He turns to his disciples, his eyes kind and knowing, asking, “Have you understood all these things?” With eager hearts, they respond, “Yes, Lord.” And then he reveals the profound task of the teacher: to draw from the storeroom of wisdom, sharing both ancient truths and fresh revelations. Just as the fishermen discern between good and bad, so too must we sift through our own lives, embracing the treasures of faith that nurture our souls and enlighten our paths.
