Show Don't Tell: Matthew 14:1-12

Picture a lavish banquet hall, adorned with shimmering lights and fragrant, roasted meats. The laughter of guests fills the air, their goblets raised high in celebration. It’s Herod’s birthday, a night meant for revelry, yet beneath the surface, a dark current swirls, unseen by the revelers. As the music ebbs and flows, a young girl steps forward, her movements graceful and captivating. It is Salome, daughter of Herodias, and her dance enchants the king. Herod, intoxicated by the spectacle, declares with a flourish, “Ask for anything, even half my kingdom!”

But in the shadows of that hall, a specter looms—the ghost of John the Baptist. In a chilling flicker of memory, Herod recalls John’s piercing gaze and the thunderous voice that had challenged him, calling out his sin of marrying his brother’s wife. “This is John risen from the dead!” he quivers, guilt clawing at his conscience.

When Salome whispers her dark request to her mother, Herodias, a palpable tension shrouds the room. “The head of John the Baptist on a platter,” she instructs, her voice cold and resolute. Herod’s heart races; he is trapped, ensnared by an oath and the voracious eyes of his guests.

The executioner’s footsteps echo ominously as he descends into the dank, dark dungeon. The blade flashes in the candlelight, and moments later, the grisly trophy is presented, a gruesome crown for a king’s birthday feast. As the platter is brought forth, the laughter dies, replaced by whispers of horror.
