Show Don't Tell: Matthew 15:1-20
Picture a bustling marketplace in first-century Judea, where the air is thick with the aroma of freshly baked bread and ripe figs. The sun casts long shadows as merchants call out to passersby, their voices mingling with the laughter of children playing nearby. Here, among the colorful stalls and vibrant life, a group of Pharisees, dressed in their flowing robes, arrives from Jerusalem, their faces etched with scrutiny.
In the midst of this scene, Jesus sits with His disciples, sharing a simple meal of bread and olives. Yet, as they eat, the Pharisees take notice. "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders by eating with unwashed hands?" their leader, a stern man named Eli, demands, his voice carrying an air of righteous indignation.
With a piercing gaze, Jesus responds, "Why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?" The crowd around them hushes, sensing the tension. Jesus illustrates their hypocrisy with a story of Corban, a religious loophole allowing people to avoid caring for their aging parents by designating their resources to God. "You honor God with your lips," He continues, "but your hearts are far from Him." The crowd murmurs, captivated by His boldness.
Turning to His followers, Jesus declares, “Listen and understand: what goes into someone's mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.” He looks at the disciples, who are whispering anxiously that the Pharisees are offended. With unwavering resolve, He adds, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. Leave them; they are blind guides.”
