Show Don't Tell: Matthew 16:1-12
The sun hung low over the Galilean hills, casting golden hues across the water as Jesus and His disciples approached the shore. A tense air clung to the group. Just moments before, the Pharisees and Sadducees—traditional adversaries—had set aside their enmity, joining forces to confront Jesus. Their request for a sign from heaven felt like a challenge, a calculated attempt to undermine Him. With a deep sigh that echoed the weight of His mission, Jesus looked at them, His voice steady but filled with disappointment. “You can predict the weather by the sky, yet you fail to see the signs of the times?”
As He turned away, sailing across the lake, the disciples were preoccupied, rummaging through their bags in search of bread. Their chatter was light-hearted, but a shadow of concern crept into their hearts when they realized they had forgotten to bring enough food.
“Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees,” Jesus warned, His tone shifting from casual to serious. The disciples, still focused on their empty basket, looked at one another in confusion. “Is it because we didn’t bring any bread?” they murmured.
Jesus shook His head, a mix of frustration and tenderness in His eyes. “You of little faith! Don’t you remember how I multiplied five loaves to feed five thousand? Or seven loaves for four thousand?” There was a moment of silence, then understanding dawned. The realization hit them like a wave; He wasn’t speaking of bread at all. Rather, He was warning them about the insidious influence of the Pharisees and Sadducees—how a little yeast, a small amount of false teaching, could permeate the whole batch of their faith.
