Show Don't Tell: Matthew 21:18-22

As dawn broke over the hills of Judea, the air was thick with the sweet scent of dew-kissed earth. Jesus, weary yet filled with purpose, walked the dusty road with His disciples. The golden sun peeked over the horizon, illuminating the vibrant greens of the fig trees lining their path. One particular tree caught His eye—lush with leaves but barren of fruit, a stark contrast to the promise of its appearance.

With a pang of hunger in His stomach, He approached the tree, perhaps envisioning the sweet taste of fresh figs. But as He reached to pluck a fruit, his fingers only brushed against the glossy leaves. Disappointment washed over Him, and in a moment that would echo through the ages, He spoke with authority: “May you never bear fruit again!” The words hung in the air, heavy with meaning.

The disciples stood in stunned silence, eyes wide with disbelief. As the sun rose higher, they watched in utter astonishment as the once-vibrant fig tree withered and shriveled before their eyes. A wave of confusion washed over them, and they turned to each other, whispering, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”

But this was no mere act of frustration over an empty stomach. This fig tree was a living parable of Israel itself—adorned with religious rituals and magnificent temples, yet devoid of true spiritual fruit. Just the day before, Jesus had cleansed the temple, exposing the emptiness behind the pomp and circumstance. Now, He turned to His disciples with a profound truth: “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but you can even command a mountain to cast itself into the sea.”
