Show Don't Tell: Matthew 2:13-23
In the stillness of a Palestinian night, the air hangs heavy with the scent of olive trees and the distant chatter of night creatures. A soft voice pierces the silence: "Get up. Take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt." Joseph, heart pounding like a drum, stirs from sleep. The urgency of the words grips him; there is no time for questions. He gently shakes Mary awake, her eyes wide with fear. They scramble to gather their few belongings—simple tunics, a few scraps of bread, and a blanket to keep their toddler, Jesus, warm against the chill of night.
Outside, the world is shrouded in darkness except for the flickering light of a single lantern. The quiet of Bethlehem is deceiving; behind them, the shadows stir with the menace of Herod's soldiers. The echo of distant cries fills the air—mothers weeping for their children, the heart-wrenching reality that every boy under two has been taken. Rachel, a figure from old tales, weeps for her lost sons, and the streets bear witness to a horror that will not soon be forgotten.
As they flee into the unknown, the road to Egypt looms ahead, unmarked and perilous. Joseph grips Mary’s hand tightly, their toddler nestled against his chest. Each step forward is laced with uncertainty, but they move with a fierce determination born of love and divine guidance.
Years later, when Herod’s shadow finally lifts, another dream beckons Joseph back. Yet even then, a new danger awaits in Judea under Archelaus's rule. With a heart renewed by faith, Joseph listens once more and redirects them to Nazareth. In that humble town, the Savior of the world grows up, shaped not only by the promise of God but by the courage of a father who listened intently and obeyed against the night’s darkness.
