Show Don't Tell: Matthew 23:37-39
As Jesus stood on the brow of the Mount of Olives, overlooking the sprawling city of Jerusalem, His heart was heavy, weighed down by grief. Picture the golden stones of the temple glistening in the sunlight, a symbol of hope and faith for the people. Yet, beneath this façade of glory lay a city steeped in rejection. "Jerusalem, Jerusalem," He cried, His voice a mixture of sorrow and longing. Here was a city that had tasted the divine and yet turned its back on the prophets sent to guide it.
Imagine the scene: the dusty streets filled with the sounds of bustling merchants and the cries of children playing, unaware of the divine heartache unfolding above them. Jesus’ words sliced through the air like a gentle breeze, “How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings.” You can almost see Him, arms outstretched, embodying a mother hen, vulnerable yet fiercely protective, desperately calling out to her wayward chicks.
But then came the heartbreaking reality, “And you were not willing.” In those four words, hear the finality of a choice, the echo of God’s unfulfilled desire. The temple, once a vibrant heart of faith, lay desolate. The rich aroma of incense, the joyous songs of worship, all replaced by a chilling silence. "Look, your house is left to you desolate," He warned.
The promise of hope would return, yet the present moment was steeped in judgment. “For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’” In that moment, the air thick with emotion, we feel the weight of recognition deferred, the potential of redemption lingering just out of reach, a poignant reminder that God's grace, though abundant, is not an infinite offering to those who refuse to respond.
