Show Don't Tell: Matthew 26:69-75

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the courtyard of the high priest’s house, a chill settled in the air. The faint flicker of torches illuminated the faces of those gathered, filled with tension and uncertainty. There, huddled in the shadows, stood Peter, his heart racing. He could hear the muffled whispers of the crowd, the crackle of fire, and the distant echo of footsteps.

Suddenly, a servant girl stepped forward, her youthful face alight with recognition. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she declared, her voice cutting through the murmurs like a sword. Panic seized Peter. He could feel the heat of the flames dancing against his skin and the weight of his own fear pressing down on him. “I don’t know what you’re talking about!” he blurted, his voice trembling, betraying the bravado he once carried.

He moved toward the gateway, his heart pounding in his chest, desperate for escape. But another servant girl, with eyes keen and piercing, pointed him out again. “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth!” The accusation hung heavy in the air. “I don’t know the man!” Peter shouted, his voice rising, laced with desperation and an oath that echoed through the courtyard.

Then came the bystanders, their eyes narrowing, sensing the truth. “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.” A chill ran down Peter’s spine. His Galilean roots were unmistakable, the very thing he tried to hide now exposing him. In a moment of sheer agony, he called down curses, swearing, “I don’t know the man!”
