Show Don't Tell: Matthew 4:1-11
Out in the desolate wilderness, just outside Jericho, the air hangs heavy with silence, broken only by the whisper of wind across the sunbaked earth. Picture Jesus, a man weary and worn, having fasted for forty grueling days. His body is a tapestry of hunger—stomach gnawing, mouth parched, energy fading—but His spirit remains resolute. The sun beats down mercilessly, casting shadows that dance like mirages on the horizon.
Then, like a dark cloud, the tempter approaches, slithering through the heat. “If you are the Son of God,” he taunts, pointing to the round stones at Jesus’ feet, their surface smooth and inviting, resembling fresh-baked loaves of bread. Can you feel the desperation? The longing? “Tell these stones to become bread.” The air thickens with the weight of that challenge. But Jesus stands firm, His voice steady, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
The scene shifts. Now Jesus finds Himself scaling the heights of the temple, the dizzying drop plunging to the city below. “Throw yourself down,” the tempter sneers, “for the angels will catch you.” The thrill of temptation lingers in the air, twisting Scripture into a dare to manipulate the divine. In that moment of vertigo, Jesus responds, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”
Finally, they ascend a high mountain. The expanse of kingdoms stretches before Him—glittering cities, vast empires, a treasure trove of power. “All this can be yours,” the tempter offers, “if you bow down and worship me.” In that moment, the allure of an easy path ignites temptation, but Jesus looks the serpent in the eye and declares, “Away from me, Satan.”
