Show Don't Tell: Matthew 5:21-26
Imagine a sun-drenched afternoon in a small village, where children play and laughter dances through the air. The marketplace buzzes with vendors shouting about ripe figs and fresh bread. Among the crowd gathers a diverse group of villagers, from well-respected elders to weary laborers, all drawn to a man named Jesus who stands on a gentle rise, speaking with an authority that makes hearts flutter.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not murder,’” He begins, and a collective sigh of relief sweeps through the crowd. They nod, some even exchange glances, thinking, I’ve never killed anyone. I’m safe here. But then, Jesus leans closer, His voice dropping to a tender urgency. “But I tell you… anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.”
The air thickens with tension as their faces shift from relief to discomfort. Faces turn pale; self-righteousness drains like the sunlight slipping behind a cloud. “Who hasn’t been angry?” they whisper. “Who among us hasn’t dismissed someone with the word ‘Raca’—worthless—as if it were nothing?” The sting of those words hangs heavy in the air.
Jesus presses deeper, painting a vivid picture: “Imagine you’re at the altar, offering your precious gift to God. Suddenly, a memory strikes. You remember a brother who feels wronged—a sister you’ve avoided. What do you do? Leave your gift!” Gasps ripple through the crowd. “Go first, reconcile. Then come back and offer your gift.”
