Show Don't Tell: Matthew 6:19-24
Imagine a bustling marketplace in Jerusalem, the air thick with the scent of spices and freshly baked bread. Merchants call out, enticing passersby with shimmering trinkets and rich fabrics that catch the sun’s rays. Yet, amid this vibrant scene, there’s a quiet truth unfolding—a truth that echoes in the heart of our Savior’s teaching.
Picture a beautiful silk garment, vivid and colorful, hanging proudly in a merchant’s stall. But behind that beauty lies the threat of destruction: moth larvae, invisible at first, begin their relentless work, chewing through the very fabric of what seems so valuable. Nearby, an artisan tends to his iron tools—shiny and new—but rust creeps in too, its orange stain spreading like a slow disease, reminding us that what we possess is impermanent. And as the sun sets, the shadows lengthen, revealing the cracks in the mud-brick wall where thieves might soon break in, their hands eager to snatch what isn’t theirs.
In stark contrast, Jesus invites us to consider the treasure laid up in heaven, a treasure untouched by the decay of this world. "Where your treasure is," He says, "there your heart will be also." Our hearts gravitate toward our investments—what we cherish, what we pursue.
Imagine your eyes, the windows to your soul, taking in this reality. A healthy eye, full of light, illuminates your path, while a bad eye, clouded with greed or distraction, casts darkness over your journey.
