Show Don't Tell: Matthew 8:28-34
In the shadow of the tombs just outside Gadara, the air hangs heavy with a restless energy, thick as the humid breeze that rustles the dry grass. The sun begins its descent, casting long, eerie shadows that dance among the graves. Here, two men emerge, their gaunt faces twisted in agony, eyes wild and unfocused, bearing the weight of torment that no one else can comprehend. The townsfolk have long avoided this cursed place—this graveyard of despair—where these men, once fathers and brothers, now roam like specters, shackled by darkness.
Suddenly, they spot Jesus, and a guttural scream erupts from one of them, raw and primal: “What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” The air crackles with their fear, the demons within recognizing the authority of the One who stands before them. They plead for mercy, begging to be cast into the nearby herd of pigs—an offer that seems absurd yet desperate.
With a commanding voice, Jesus simply says, “Go!” In that moment, the very fabric of the world shifts. The pigs, nearly two thousand of them, surge into a frenzy, squealing in terror as they hurtle down the steep bank and plunge into the dark waters of the lake. The scene is chaotic: the splash, the turmoil, the frantic churn of bodies as life is extinguished.
As the herdsmen rush into town, their faces pale with shock, word spreads like wildfire. When the townspeople arrive, they find the two men—calm, clothed, and sitting at Jesus' feet, a stark contrast to their former selves. Yet, instead of celebrating this miraculous transformation, the crowd is gripped by fear and confusion. They gaze at the empty lake, the floating remnants of their livelihood, and they plead with Jesus to leave, valuing the loss of their pigs over the restoration of these men. In that moment, we see the heart-wrenching reality: sometimes, the tangible comforts of this world blind us to the miraculous work of redemption unfolding right before our eyes.
