Show Don't Tell: Matthew 9:1-8
As the sun dipped low in the sky, casting golden rays through the narrow streets of Capernaum, a buzz of anticipation filled the air. A crowd had gathered around a modest house, eager to hear the teachings of Jesus. Among them were four friends, their faces set with determination and hope, cradling a paralyzed man named Eli on a mat. Each jolt of his lifeless body against their shoulders was a reminder of the weight they bore—not just the physical burden, but the heavy cloak of despair that enveloped Eli’s life.
They pushed through the throng, sweat beading on their brows, desperate to reach the rabbi who could heal their friend. Yet, upon arrival, they were met with disappointment; the door was blocked, and the crowd was impenetrable. But these were men of unwavering faith. They climbed onto the roof, carefully unearthing tiles, the sound of scraping clay echoing in the air. With a final heave, they lowered Eli down, the murmurs of disbelief rippling through the crowd below.
Jesus looked up, His gaze landing on the paralyzed man, and the atmosphere shifted. Instead of the expected words of healing, He offered a startling declaration: “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” Confusion washed over the crowd. The teachers of the law stirred, their voices rising in indignation: “Only God can forgive sins!” They were right, and Jesus knew it.
With a calm authority, He challenged them, “Which is easier, to say ‘Your sins are forgiven’ or to say ‘Get up and walk’?” The former is invisible, easily dismissed. Yet, with a gentle command, He turned to Eli: “Get up, take your mat, and go home.” The moment hung in silence, hearts pounding with anticipation. And then, as if the weight of the world had been lifted, Eli rose. The mat that once confined him was now under his arm as he walked out, each step a tangible testimony to the invisible authority of the One who forgives sins and heals. The crowd erupted in awe, a living testament to faith that sees beyond the visible.
