Show Don't Tell: Matthew 9:32-34
In the dusty streets of Capernaum, a crowd gathered, their murmurs rising like the heat from the sun-baked stones. Among them stood a man, his face drawn and weary, eyes shadowed by years of silence. Unable to speak, he was a prisoner of a demon that had stolen his voice and, with it, his very identity. As the crowd pressed closer, they watched in hushed anticipation, their hearts beating in rhythm with an unspoken hope.
Then, Jesus arrived, his presence lighting up the dimness of despair. With a gentle authority, he approached the tormented man, and in that moment, something electric hung in the air. “Be freed!” Jesus proclaimed, and the words resonated like a distant thunderclap. The demon shrieked and fled, leaving behind the unshackled man, who gasped for air as if he were surfacing from a long, dark ocean.
What followed was a scene that would echo through the ages. The man opened his mouth, and for the first time in years, words tumbled out—words of joy, words of gratitude, words of uncontainable wonder. “I... can speak! Praise God, I am free!” The crowd erupted in astonishment, their faces alight with disbelief and joy. "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!" they cried, witnessing a miracle that shattered their understanding of reality.
Yet, lurking in the shadows were the Pharisees, their faces twisted with disdain. “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons,” they scoffed, unable to see the light for their own darkness. Here lay the heart of the matter: two groups, witnessing the same miracle but responding in starkly different ways. The battle lines were drawn. Each healing would deepen the divide, hardening hearts that refused to embrace the truth of Christ’s transformative power. And in that moment, we are reminded: the miracle of Jesus does not just challenge the demons of the afflicted, but also the demons of doubt within us.
