Show Don't Tell: Psalm 125
Imagine standing on the ancient walls of Jerusalem, the sun beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a golden hue over the rugged hills that cradle this sacred city. You can feel the cool breeze brush against your skin, carrying with it the whispers of generations past. As you look out, you see the hills rising majestically around you, like a protective embrace, a natural fortress. This is the imagery the psalmist paints when he says, “Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.”
In that moment, you recognize that trust in God transforms us into something steadfast and unyielding, akin to the very mountains surrounding this holy place. Just as those hills encircle Jerusalem, the LORD surrounds His people, providing a refuge from the chaos of the world.
Picture a family gathered in their modest home just outside the city. They are facing troubles—job loss, health issues, heartache—but they hold hands and pray, their voices trembling yet hopeful. In the face of uncertainty, they embody the promise of the psalm: “The scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous.” Their faith, like those hills, is their fortress.
And yet, the psalmist warns that those who stray from righteousness will find themselves banished, cut off from the source of goodness. It’s a reminder that our choices matter; they shape our lives and the lives of those around us. As we gather here today, let us affirm our commitment to trust in the Lord, believing that He not only surrounds us, but also guides our paths with steadfast love. “LORD, do good to those who are good, to those who are upright in heart.” May we be counted among those who thrive under the watchful gaze of our Creator, filled with His peace that surpasses all understanding.
