Show Don't Tell: Psalm 4
Instead of saying "David found peace despite enemies," hear the evening prayer. "Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer." Then he turns to his accusers: "How long will you people turn my glory into shame? How long will you love delusions and seek false gods?" Advice to the angry: "Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent." Lie in bed. Search your heart. Be silent. Let the anger cool before morning. "Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the LORD." Many ask: "Who can show us any good?" The psalmist answers: "Let the light of your face shine on us, LORD." Then the comparison: "Fill my heart with greater joy than those who have abundant grain and new wine." More joy than harvest celebration—from God's presence. "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety." Psalm 3 was morning; this is evening. Both end in sleep. Both trust God through the night.
