Show Don't Tell: Psalm 70
The early evening sun cast long shadows as David stood at the edge of a precipice, his heart pounding like a drum in his chest. He could hear the distant echo of laughter from those who sought his ruin, mocking him with their taunts. “Aha! Aha!” they jeered, their voices sharp and cruel, penetrating the still air like arrows aimed at his soul. The bitter taste of fear lingered at the back of his throat as he clutched the rough fabric of his tunic. In that moment, the weight of his desperation bore down on him; he felt the sting of sweat on his brow and the tremor in his hands.
“Lord, I need you now!” he cried out, his voice a desperate plea that reverberated off the rocks. “Hasten, O God, to save me; come quickly, Lord, to help me!” His words were not merely an echo of his thoughts—they were an urgent cry from a heart that understood the gravity of his situation. He was poor and needy, his only hope resting in the hands of the Almighty. He could visualize the faces of those who sought to bring him down, and the realization struck him: he was in a battle not just for his life, but for his very soul.
With every heartbeat, the contrast grew clearer. The mockers, filled with glee, would face disgrace, while those who sought the Lord would rejoice. “But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who long for your saving help always say, ‘The Lord is great!’” David lifted his weary eyes to the heavens, longing for the moment when his cry would be met with divine intervention. In that sacred stillness, he held onto hope, leaning into the urgency of his plea, a simple man in desperate need of a great God.
