Sixteen Billion Switches
When Apple released the M1 chip in 2020, engineers packed sixteen billion transistors onto a piece of silicon smaller than a postage stamp. Each transistor performs the simplest possible task: it switches on or off. One or zero. Nothing more.
By itself, a single transistor is meaningless — a microscopic gate opening and closing. But the designers at Apple arranged those sixteen billion switches in precise patterns, and together they can edit a feature film, compose music, or connect a missionary in rural Kenya with her prayer team back home.
Here is what strikes me: not one of those transistors chose its position. The designer placed each one with intention, knowing exactly how it would contribute to the whole.
The apostle Paul could have been describing a microchip when he wrote, "God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be" (1 Corinthians 12:18). Your purpose may feel as small as a single switch — on or off, yes or no, show up or stay home. But the Designer who knit you together knows exactly where you belong in the circuit.
You do not need to understand the whole design to fulfill your part. The transistor does not comprehend the symphony it helps create. It simply does what it was made to do — and the masterpiece emerges.
