Speech Fitly Employed: The Psalmist's Worthy Subject
The psalmist declares his resolve to speak of God's statutes, and Spurgeon observes that true speech must be 'fitly employed.' This means our words deserve a worthy subject—not idle gossip, vain boasting, or empty chatter that consumes the day like smoke.
What subject commands our speech? The psalmist chose God's testimonies—a choice subject indeed. It is full, inexhaustible in depth, containing infinite wisdom for every circumstance of life. A man might speak of God's law for seventy years and still discover treasures untouched.
Moreover, this subject is profitable to men. When we speak of God's commandments and His character, we build up the hearer's soul. We do not merely entertain; we edify. We do not simply please the ear; we strengthen the spirit. Every word becomes seed sown in good ground.
Finally, such speech glorifies God. When the psalmist declared, 'I will speak of thy testimonies,' he understood that Yahweh is magnified through the faithful proclamation of His will. Our lips become instruments of His praise.
