Spiritual Insight: A Better Political Imagination
Dear God of every nation and neighborhood,
Hebrews 13:2 tells us that some have entertained angels without knowing it — and I wonder how often we have walked past them. The woman at the town hall meeting whose accent marks her as foreign, whose hands shake as she approaches the microphone to speak about her children's school. The man across the aisle whose yard sign makes our jaw tighten before we even learn his name. Martin Luther insisted that every Christian holds a "priesthood" not for their own comfort, but for the sake of their neighbor — especially the neighbor we have not yet bothered to understand.
Lord, forgive us for building our political lives around fear rather than agape — that stubborn, self-giving love that doesn't ask whether the stranger deserves a seat at the table. Teach us a better imagination, one shaped not by cable news but by your Kingdom, where the last are first, where the stranger turns out to be an angel, where the enemy turns out to be someone whose grandchildren play in the same park as ours.
Give us the courage of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who saw that faith divorced from public life is no faith at all. Make us brave enough to sit across the table from someone who votes differently, and curious enough to ask, "Tell me your story."
