Steady Hands Over the Hudson
On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 lifted off from New York's LaGuardia Airport with 155 souls aboard, bound for Charlotte, North Carolina. Barely three minutes into the climb, a flock of Canada geese struck the Airbus A320, silencing both engines. The cockpit went eerily quiet. Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, a former Air Force fighter pilot with over 40 years of flying experience, assessed his options in seconds. There was no time to reach an airport. He keyed the radio to air traffic control with words that still carry weight: "We're gonna be in the Hudson."
What witnesses on the Manhattan shoreline saw next defied belief. The aircraft glided low over the George Washington Bridge and touched down on the frigid Hudson River with remarkable precision. Ferries and rescue boats converged within minutes. Passengers stood on the wings in the January cold, water lapping at their feet. Sullenberger walked the cabin twice to confirm every person was out before he himself stepped off the sinking plane. All 155 survived.
Isaiah 43:2 promises, "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you." God never promised His children would avoid the crisis. He promised His presence in the middle of it. When the engines of your life go silent and the waters rise beneath you, the Almighty does not abandon the cockpit. He is steady when everything else is shaking.
