Stolen Silver and Borrowed Grace
In the 2012 film Les Misérables, there is a scene that has brought audiences to tears for generations — because it looks exactly like the gospel.
Jean Valjean, a convict hardened by nineteen years in prison, is taken in for the night by Bishop Myriel, who feeds him and gives him a bed. Valjean repays this kindness by stealing the bishop's silver and fleeing into the darkness. When the police drag him back, the stolen goods stuffed in his bag, Valjean braces for the punishment he knows he deserves.
But the bishop does something no one expects. He looks at the officers and says the silver was a gift. Then he turns to Valjean, picks up two silver candlesticks, and presses them into the stunned man's hands. "I have bought your soul for God," he tells him.
That moment shatters Valjean. Not the prison. Not the chains. Not the law. Grace does what punishment never could — it breaks him open and remakes him from the inside out.
This is the heartbeat of the gospel. We stand guilty, and the Almighty does not give us what we deserve. He gives us what we could never earn. Paul wrote it plainly: "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).
You cannot earn candlesticks like those. You can only receive them, weep, and let them change the way you live from this day forward.
