Stress Wood

When scientists sealed Biosphere 2 in the Arizona desert in the early 1990s, they created a nearly perfect ecosystem — controlled temperature, ideal humidity, optimal conditions for growth. The trees inside shot up remarkably fast. But before they could reach maturity, something baffling happened. They fell over.

The researchers discovered what was missing: wind.

In the natural world, when wind pushes against a tree, the trunk responds by producing what botanists call "stress wood" — denser, stronger fibers that reinforce the tree against future storms. Without that resistance, the Biosphere 2 trees grew tall but brittle. They had height without strength, growth without resilience.

The apostle Paul understood this principle long before any botanist named it. "We also glory in our sufferings," he wrote, "because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). The winds that threaten to break us are the very forces that make us strong.
