The Album That Was Never Rehearsed

In 1959, Miles Davis walked into Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York with an audacious plan. He handed his musicians — John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley — a set of simple modal sketches instead of fully written arrangements. There would be no rehearsal. Most tracks would be captured in a single take.

The result was Kind of Blue, now the best-selling jazz album in history.

What Davis understood is that trust doesn't require a complete script. It requires a willingness to step into the unknown with confidence in something larger than yourself. Each musician had to listen deeply, respond in the moment, and believe that beauty would emerge from what they couldn't predict or control.

Faith works the same way. The Almighty rarely hands us a fully written score for our lives. Instead, He gives us just enough — a melody line, a key signature, a tempo — and asks us to play. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart," Proverbs 3:5 tells us, "and lean not on your own understanding."

We want every note accounted for before we begin. But God invites us into something more like jazz — a living, breathing collaboration where we trust the Composer even when we cannot see what comes next. The music that emerges from that trust is always richer than anything we could have scripted on our own.
