The Algorithm That Ignores Self-Promotion
When Larry Page and Sergey Brin developed Google's original search algorithm at Stanford in 1998, they built it on a counterintuitive principle. PageRank did not care what a webpage said about itself. A site could fill every line with "I am the best, most authoritative, most important page on the internet," and the algorithm would shrug. What determined your rank was how many other trustworthy pages linked to you. Your importance was decided entirely by the testimony of others.
It was a revolutionary idea in technology — and an ancient one in scripture. Proverbs 27:2 says, "Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips."
Humility works like PageRank. The person who constantly announces their own importance — padding their résumé, steering every conversation back to their achievements, making sure everyone notices what they have sacrificed — is like a webpage stuffed with self-referencing keywords. It might look impressive on the surface, but it carries no real weight.
The people who earn genuine authority are the ones others cannot stop talking about — not because they demanded attention, but because their quiet faithfulness and unglamorous service made such a mark that others did the testifying for them.
God's Kingdom has always run on this algorithm. The last shall be first. The servant shall be the greatest. The One who emptied Himself of all divine privilege was the One God exalted to the highest place.
