The Algorithm That Rewards What Others Say About You
When Larry Page and Sergey Brin developed Google's PageRank algorithm at Stanford in 1998, they built it on a counterintuitive insight. The most authoritative page on the internet is never the one shouting loudest about itself. PageRank does not care how many times a website declares itself the expert. It measures how many other trustworthy sources link to that page. A site that quietly offers excellent content and earns the endorsement of others will always outrank the one consumed with self-promotion.
It is a principle the Kingdom of God understood long before Silicon Valley. Proverbs 27:2 says, "Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips." Jesus taught that "whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted" (Matthew 23:12). In God's economy, true authority is never seized — it is recognized by others because it has been conferred by the Almighty.
The websites that game the system — stuffing themselves with keywords, manufacturing fake endorsements — eventually get penalized. Google catches them. And so does life. The pastor who serves without fanfare, the neighbor who helps without posting about it, the friend who listens without steering the conversation back to themselves — these are the people whose lives carry real weight.
Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is building something so genuinely good that others cannot help but point to it — and then pointing them further still, to the One who deserves all the glory.
