The Barrier That Wasn't There
In 1967, psychologist Martin Seligman conducted experiments at the University of Pennsylvania that revealed something startling about captivity. Dogs that had experienced inescapable shocks eventually stopped trying to escape — even when the barrier was removed and freedom was simple. They lay down and whimpered, having learned to believe that escape was impossible. Seligman called it "learned helplessness."
The breakthrough came when researchers physically guided the animals through the open door, again and again, until they finally believed what had been true all along — they were free to go.
This is what sin does to the human soul. We endure its weight for so long that we forget escape is possible. We internalize the lie that we are permanently stuck — in addiction, in shame, in bitterness, in cycles we inherited from our parents. The cage door swings wide open, and we don't move.
But this is exactly why Christ came. Paul writes to the Galatians, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery" (Galatians 5:1). Jesus doesn't just unlock the door. Like those researchers, He walks us through it — through His Word, through His Spirit, through His people — until we finally believe the truth.
The barrier isn't there anymore. You can walk out.
