The Big Fundamental

Tim Duncan won five NBA championships with the San Antonio Spurs across nineteen seasons. He earned two league MVP awards, three Finals MVP trophies, and fifteen All-Star selections. By every measure, he was one of the greatest basketball players who ever lived.

And yet, you would never have known it by watching him.

Duncan never pounded his chest after a dunk. He never taunted opponents. He never demanded a trade to a bigger market or a brighter spotlight. While other superstars built empires of shoe deals and reality shows, Duncan drove a modest car, wore plain clothes, and quietly went about his work. His nickname said everything: "The Big Fundamental." No flash. No spectacle. Just excellence, offered without fanfare.

After retiring in 2016, Duncan returned to the Spurs — not as a commentator or celebrity ambassador, but as an assistant coach. He sat at the end of the bench, clipboard in hand, pouring what he knew into younger players.

Paul wrote to the Philippians, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves" (Philippians 2:3). Tim Duncan played basketball like that verse reads.

True humility is not pretending you have nothing to offer. It is knowing exactly what you carry and choosing to use it in service of others rather than in pursuit of applause. The Most High does not ask us to shrink. He asks us to kneel — and from that posture, to lift everyone around us.
