The Blood Set Free
In 2019, Victoria Gray became the first person in the United States to receive CRISPR gene therapy for sickle cell disease. For thirty-four years, her own blood had been her prison. Sickle cell causes red blood cells to twist into rigid, crescent shapes that clog tiny blood vessels, triggering episodes of excruciating pain that sent her to the emergency room again and again. The very cells designed to carry life through her body had become the source of her suffering.
The treatment worked at the deepest level imaginable. Scientists edited the genetic code inside her bone marrow stem cells, correcting the instructions that had been producing misshapen cells since before she was born. Within months, her body began manufacturing healthy, flexible red blood cells. The pain crises stopped. Victoria later testified that she felt, for the first time in her life, truly free.
Notice where the healing had to happen. No painkiller could fix it. No surgery on the blood vessels could fix it. Freedom required transformation at the source — in the very code that shaped who she was at a cellular level.
This is what Paul means when he writes, "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come" (2 Corinthians 5:17). God does not merely manage our symptoms or widen the passages where sin has made us stuck. He rewrites us from the inside out. The freedom Christ offers is not a workaround. It is a cure.
