The Blood That Answers to Another Name

In a bone marrow transplant, physicians must first destroy the patient's own diseased marrow through intensive chemotherapy. It is a harrowing process — the old system, riddled with cancer, must be completely dismantled before anything new can take root. Then donor stem cells are infused into the bloodstream, and they migrate to the hollow centers of the bones, where they begin to engraft.

Here is the astonishing part. After successful engraftment, the patient's blood type can actually change to match the donor's. A person who walked into the hospital with Type A blood may walk out months later with Type O. Their DNA profile in blood samples will show the donor's genetic signature, not their own. Hematologists call this "full donor chimerism" — the old blood-forming identity is gone, and a completely new one has taken its place.

Paul could not have described it more precisely if he had studied medicine. "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here" (2 Corinthians 5:17). Redemption is not a renovation. God does not patch the old system and send us home. He replaces what was killing us with the very life of Another.

The old blood type is gone. The disease no longer defines you. When the Great Physician examines your life, He finds the DNA of His Son running through your veins.
