The Blood That Forgets Who You Were

In a bone marrow transplant, something happens that sounds more like scripture than science. After a patient's diseased marrow is destroyed through chemotherapy, a donor's healthy stem cells are infused into their bloodstream. Over the following weeks, those transplanted cells find their way into the hollows of the patient's bones and begin producing entirely new blood.

Here is the remarkable part. If you draw the patient's blood six months later and run a DNA test, the blood no longer carries the patient's genetic code. It carries the donor's. Hematologists call this "full donor chimerism" — the person's blood has become, at the molecular level, someone else's. The old blood-making identity has been completely replaced.

The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here." He was not speaking in vague metaphors. He was describing something as thorough as chimerism. When God begins His transforming work in a human life, He does not merely patch the old system. He replaces it at the source. The marrow-deep places where our impulses and identities are formed — those are exactly where the Holy Spirit takes up residence.

You may still look the same on the outside. Your face has not changed. But the life running through you is no longer your own. It belongs to the One who gave it.
