The Body God Built for Battle
In 1901, Japanese chemist Jokichi Takamine became the first scientist to isolate adrenaline, the hormone produced by two small glands perched atop your kidneys. What he helped the world understand was remarkable. When danger strikes, those adrenal glands flood your bloodstream with epinephrine in milliseconds. Your heart rate surges. Your airways widen. Blood rushes to your muscles. Your pupils dilate to take in more light. Pain sensitivity actually decreases. In that single moment, your body becomes more capable than it was seconds before.
Here is what strikes me about this. God did not design the human body to shut down in the face of fear. He designed it to power up. The very chemistry of your blood changes to make you stronger when you are afraid.
Courage was never the absence of fear. Your adrenal glands prove it. Courage is what happens when fear arrives and your God-given design responds, not with paralysis, but with power.
Paul knew this when he wrote to Timothy, "For God gave us not a spirit of fear, but of power and love and self-discipline" (2 Timothy 1:7). He was not promising Timothy would never feel afraid. He was reminding him that God had already equipped him for the moment fear arrived.
So the next time your heart races before a hard conversation or a step of obedience that terrifies you, remember: that is not weakness. That is your body doing exactly what the Almighty designed it to do. He built you for this.
