The Body That Cannot Feel
Dr. Paul Brand spent decades treating leprosy patients in India, and what he discovered changed how we understand the disease. Leprosy does not cause fingers and toes to simply fall off, as many once believed. Instead, it destroys nerve endings, robbing patients of the ability to feel pain. Without that warning system, patients burn their hands on stoves, step on nails, and wear through skin without ever knowing. The damage comes not from the disease itself but from the devastating loss of connection between one part of the body and the rest.
In his book Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, Brand described how a healthy body thrives because every cell communicates. When your toe strikes a table leg, your whole body responds. You gasp, your eyes water, your hands reach down. No part suffers alone.
The apostle Paul understood this long before modern neuroscience. "If one part suffers," he wrote, "every part suffers with it" (1 Corinthians 12:26). A Christian community functions the same way. When we isolate ourselves, when we stop feeling one another's pain and stop noticing one another's struggles, we become like a body with deadened nerves. The damage compounds silently.
But when we stay connected, when we allow ourselves to feel with and for each other, we protect one another from harm we could never see on our own.
