The Body That Could Not Feel

Dr. Paul Brand spent decades as a hand surgeon in Vellore, India, treating patients with leprosy. What he discovered overturned centuries of medical assumption. Leprosy does not cause fingers and toes to simply fall away. Instead, the disease destroys nerve endings, robbing patients of the ability to feel pain.

The consequences were devastating. Without pain to warn them, patients would grip scalding pots, walk on broken bones, or sleep while rats gnawed their fingers. The body, disconnected from its own warning system, slowly destroyed itself.

Brand wrote about this discovery in Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, and the spiritual parallel struck him with force. Pain, he realized, is not the enemy — isolation from it is. The nerve cell that sends a sharp signal to the brain is performing an act of love. It says, "Stop. Something is wrong. You are being harmed."

This is what Christian community does. The brother who says, "I'm worried about you." The sister who asks, "Are you really okay?" The small group that notices when someone is pulling away. These are not intrusions — they are the nerve endings of the Body of Christ, doing exactly what Paul described in 1 Corinthians 12: "If one part suffers, every part suffers with it."

A body that cannot feel pain will destroy itself. And a believer who cuts themselves off from honest, loving community will do the same.
