The Bone That Bears the Weight
In 1892, German surgeon Julius Wolff published a remarkable discovery about the human skeleton. What became known as Wolff's Law reveals that bone is not static — it is living tissue that continuously remodels itself in response to the loads placed upon it. When stress is applied repeatedly, the body does not simply endure it. It lays down new bone mineral along the lines of pressure, growing denser, thicker, and stronger precisely where the burden is heaviest.
This is why astronauts lose bone mass in the weightlessness of space. Without resistance, the skeleton has no reason to rebuild. It is the very pressure — the daily, grinding, faithful weight-bearing — that keeps bones strong.
The apostle Paul understood this principle long before any surgeon named it. "We also glory in our sufferings," he wrote, "because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). The spiritual life follows the same architecture as bone. It is not built in the absence of pressure but in faithful response to it.
Some of you are carrying a load this morning that feels like it will break you. But the God who engineered bone to grow stronger under stress is the same God who promises that your perseverance is not wasted. Every day you show up under that weight, the Almighty is quietly remodeling you — laying down strength exactly where you need it most.
The pressure is not pointless. It is building you.
