The Bones That Build Themselves

In 1892, German anatomist Julius Wolff published a discovery that still shapes modern medicine. He observed that human bones are not static structures. They are living tissue that actively remodels itself in response to stress. When force is applied repeatedly — through walking, lifting, running — specialized cells called osteoblasts lay down new mineral deposits along the lines of greatest pressure. The bone literally rebuilds itself stronger precisely where it is most burdened.

The reverse is equally true. NASA discovered that astronauts who spend months in the weightlessness of space lose up to two percent of their bone density per month. Without resistance, without the steady pull of gravity, the body sees no reason to maintain its strength. The skeleton quietly weakens in the absence of struggle.

There is a sermon written into our very bones. The writer of Hebrews understood this when he said, "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it."

The seasons that press hardest against your faith are not seasons of destruction. They are seasons of remodeling. Every unanswered prayer that keeps you on your knees, every loss that drives you deeper into the arms of the Almighty, every long obedience in the same direction — these are the forces that make your spirit denser, stronger, more capable of bearing weight.

Do not envy the life without resistance. That is the life that quietly loses its strength. The pressure you are under today is building something in you that comfort never could.
