The Brain That Refused to Quit

In 1959, a sixty-five-year-old professor named Pedro Bach-y-Rita suffered a devastating stroke that left him paralyzed and unable to speak. Doctors offered little hope. But his son George refused to accept the prognosis. With no formal training in rehabilitation, George started from the most basic movements — teaching his father to crawl across the kitchen floor, to wash pots using the wall for support, to play simple games in the yard. Progress was agonizingly slow.

But Pedro persevered. Month after month, he relearned what the stroke had stolen. Within a year, he was walking. Within two, he returned to full-time teaching at City College in New York. He hiked mountains. He lived fully until a heart attack took him in 1965.

When neuroscientists examined Pedro's brain after death, they were stunned. Ninety-seven percent of the nerves connecting his cortex to his spine had been destroyed by the stroke and never regrew. Instead, his brain had forged entirely new pathways — rerouting signals through undamaged tissue, rewiring itself one painstaking repetition at a time. Scientists now call this neuroplasticity — the brain's astonishing ability to reorganize and rebuild.

The Apostle Paul knew something about this kind of stubborn renewal. "We do not lose heart," he wrote. "Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day" (2 Corinthians 4:16). God does not always restore us along the old pathways.
