The Bridge Between Darkness and Dawn
In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the fellowship is fleeing through the Mines of Moria when a Balrog — an ancient demon of shadow and flame — rises from the deep. The company races across the narrow Bridge of Khazad-dûm, but Gandalf stops at its center. He turns to face the monster alone.
"You shall not pass!" he thunders, striking his staff against the stone. The bridge crumbles beneath the Balrog's weight, and the creature falls — but its flaming whip coils around Gandalf's ankle, dragging him toward the abyss. His last words to his friends: "Fly, you fools." And then he is gone.
The fellowship survives because one was willing to stand between them and destruction. One life, freely offered, so that others could go on.
This is the shape of the gospel. The Almighty did not watch humanity stumbling toward the abyss and simply call out directions from a safe distance. In Christ, God stepped onto the bridge. He placed Himself between us and the darkness we could never outrun on our own. "Greater love has no one than this," Jesus said, "to lay down one's life for one's friends" (John 15:13).
And here is the part that surpasses even Tolkien's imagination: the One who fell into death did not stay there. He rose — not diminished, but glorified. Our Savior stood on the bridge, descended into the deep, and came back to walk with us still.
