The Call That Grace Overruled

On June 2, 2010, Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga stood one out away from a perfect game — one of the rarest achievements in all of baseball. Twenty-six batters had come to the plate, and twenty-six had been retired. When Cleveland's Jason Donald hit a grounder, first baseman Miguel Cabrera fielded it and flipped to Galarraga covering the bag. The throw beat the runner clearly. But umpire Jim Joyce called him safe.

The replay confirmed what everyone already knew. Joyce was wrong. The perfect game was gone.

What happened next stunned the sports world. Galarraga didn't scream. He didn't throw his glove. He turned back to the mound and smiled. After the game, a devastated Joyce watched the replay and wept openly. He told reporters he had cost that young man a perfect game and that he was sorry.

The next evening, Galarraga hand-delivered the lineup card to Joyce at home plate. The two men locked hands. Joyce, still fighting tears, gripped the pitcher tight. The crowd at Comerica Park rose to its feet.

Scripture tells us, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32). Galarraga lost something the record books will never give back. But on that mound, he showed us what it looks like when grace overrules the call.

Forgiveness doesn't rewrite the past. It frees us to walk into the future without bitterness holding the ball.
