The Candle Cannot Hide: Light Demands Visibility
Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? (Mark 4:21)
The kingdom of Elohim expands through human agency. At its inception, the kingdom resembled grain cast into damp spring soil—hidden, germinating. Yet to the mature Christian, it mirrors the city John beheld descending from heaven: walls of jasper, streets of transparent gold, gates of pearl, radiating opaline light so brilliant that sun and moon became unnecessary (Revelation 21:10-23).
Christ teaches that believers function as reflectors of divine truth. Even the smallest taper is kindled for illumination. The youngest disciple must shine for others' guidance. A solitary lamp's rays, piercing miles of darkness, have preserved noble vessels and their precious cargo from destruction. Surrounded by reflectors, one modest light multiplies its influence a hundredfold.
This parable condemns those who sequester biblical knowledge. Such persons hide the candle under a bushel or beneath a bed—keeping light confined to their own breast, a closed private place. They shine not to others through their knowledge; they manifest no fruit in holy conversation; they neglect instructing others in Adonai's ways.
The remedy demands two disciplines. First: make known the kingdom's character and entrance conditions. Second: feed your lamp with oil—cultivate deepening knowledge through study and prayer. The vision of the heavenly city, once glimpsed, must not fade. Greater generosity in sharing gospel truth brings clearer revelation to the giver. The burning lamp requires constant nourishment and deliberate placement upon the candlestick.
