The Candlesticks of Grace

In the 2012 film Les Misérables, there is a scene that stops you cold. Jean Valjean, a convict hardened by nineteen years of brutal imprisonment, is taken in for the night by the Bishop of Digne. The bishop feeds him, gives him a warm bed, and treats him with a dignity he has not known in decades. And Valjean repays this kindness by stealing the bishop's silver in the dead of night.

When the police drag Valjean back the next morning, the stolen silver in hand, the bishop does something no one expects. He tells the officers that the silver was a gift. Then he turns to Valjean, picks up two silver candlesticks, and presses them into his hands. "I have bought your soul for God," he says.

That moment shatters Valjean. Not the prison. Not the chains. Not the shame. It is the undeserved mercy of a man who had every right to condemn him that finally breaks him open and makes him new.

This is the shape of the forgiveness we have received from the Almighty. We stood guilty. We had nothing to offer. And instead of condemnation, He pressed grace into our hands and said, "Now go — live differently."

Forgiveness does not pretend the wrong never happened. It absorbs the cost and sets the other person free. That is what Christ did on the cross. That is what we are invited to do for one another.
