The Carvings No One Would See

In the great medieval cathedrals of Europe, stonemasons spent decades carving figures and scenes into every surface of the structure. What astonishes modern visitors to places like Chartres Cathedral is the discovery of breathtakingly detailed carvings high on the roofline and behind massive columns — places where no congregation member could ever see them. These anonymous craftsmen chiseled delicate feathers on angel wings and intricate folds in stone robes hundreds of feet above the nave, knowing full well that no human eye would appreciate their work from the ground.

When asked why they labored over details no one would ever notice, the stonemasons gave a simple answer: "Because God sees."

That is the essence of faith. Faith is not a performance for an audience. It is not the spiritual equivalent of decorating a storefront window. Faith is the quiet, careful work we do in the hidden places of our lives — the patience we show when no one is watching, the prayer we whisper when no one is listening, the kindness we extend when no one will applaud.

The writer of Hebrews tells us that faith is "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Those stonemasons understood this instinctively. They carved for an audience of One, trusting that their unseen faithfulness mattered to the God who sees all things.
