The Cathedral He Would Never See

In 1883, a young Spanish architect named Antoni Gaudí took over construction of a church in Barcelona. What began as a modest project became his life's consuming purpose. The Basilica de la Sagrada Família grew into something the world had never seen — towering spires shaped like honeycombs, facades crawling with stone figures, columns inside that branched like a forest canopy reaching toward heaven.

Gaudí knew he would never see it finished. The scope was too vast, the detail too intricate for one lifetime. Yet he poured himself into it completely. In his final years, he moved into a small workshop on the construction site, living among the dust and scaffolding. When someone asked why he lavished such care on the highest spires — details no human eye would ever see from the ground — he is said to have replied, "The angels will see them."

He died in 1926. A century later, the basilica is still being built.

There is something freeing in Gaudí's example. He did not need to see the finished cathedral to know his work mattered. His purpose was not to complete the building. His purpose was faithfulness to the vision God had given him.

Some of us carry a quiet frustration that we cannot see the full picture of what God is doing with our lives. We lay one stone, then another, unable to glimpse the spire. But purpose was never about seeing the finished product. It is about trusting the Architect who drew the plans — and giving our best work, even to the parts only the angels will see.
