The Cathedral No One Built Alone
In the twelfth century, after fire ravaged the cathedral at Chartres, France, something remarkable happened. Nobles stepped out of their carriages. Merchants closed their shops. Farmers walked in from the surrounding villages. Medieval chroniclers recorded the astonishing sight: men and women of every station yoked themselves to carts loaded with limestone and hauled them from the quarries to the building site — people who had never spoken to one another now pulling side by side, some weeping, all working.
The rebuilding took decades. No single person could point to the finished cathedral and say, "I built that." The glaziers who crafted those luminous blue windows never laid a single stone. The masons who raised the soaring vaults never saw the finished spires pierce the sky above the wheat fields of the Beauce plain.
And yet — Chartres Cathedral stands. Eight centuries later, pilgrims still walk through its doors and look up in wonder.
Paul wrote, "Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it" (1 Corinthians 12:27). No one member carries the whole. No single gift completes the work. But when a community yokes itself together — ordinary people pulling toward something none of them could build alone — the Almighty raises something that endures for generations.
You are not called to build the cathedral by yourself. You are called to take your place alongside others and pull.
