The Cathedral No One Could Build Alone

In 1248, the people of Cologne, Germany began building their cathedral. They laid the first massive stones of what would become one of the tallest structures in the medieval world. Then something remarkable happened — or rather, kept happening. Generation after generation picked up where the last left off. Fathers taught sons to cut stone. Guilds passed down techniques for fitting glass into lead. Architects handed sketches to apprentices who would not live to see the finished spires.

It took 632 years. The Cologne Cathedral was not completed until 1880.

No single person ever saw both the beginning and the end. No one generation could claim the achievement as its own. The master stonemasons of the thirteenth century never gazed up at the finished towers. The glaziers who set the final windows never met the workers who dug the foundation. And yet every one of them was essential. Remove any generation from the chain, and the cathedral remains unfinished.

The Apostle Paul saw this same truth at work in the church. "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow" (1 Corinthians 3:6). None of us builds the Kingdom alone. We inherit the faith of those before us, and we lay stones for those who come after.
