The Cathedral No One Would Live to See

In 1882, Antoni Gaudí began work on the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. He knew from the start that he would never see it finished. The project was so ambitious, so layered with meaning and complexity, that it would take generations to complete. Yet Gaudí poured himself into it completely, spending the last twelve years of his life sleeping in his workshop on the construction site. When critics questioned why he labored over details no one alive would ever see finished, Gaudí reportedly replied, "My client is not in a hurry."

His client, of course, was God.

More than a century later, the Sagrada Familia is still under construction. Cranes still rise above its spires. And yet even unfinished, it takes your breath away. Millions visit each year, overwhelmed by columns shaped like forest trees and light that pours through stained glass like liquid color.

Faith asks us to build like Gaudí — to invest in things we may never see completed. To raise children whose full story we will not witness. To plant seeds in a community whose harvest belongs to the next generation. To trust that the Architect of it all sees the finished design, even when we are standing in the scaffolding.

Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for. Sometimes the most sacred act of faith is picking up your tools and building for a tomorrow you will never touch.
