The Cathedral of Crystals

Deep in the Naica Mine of Chihuahua, Mexico, scientists discovered a chamber that took their breath away. The Cave of Crystals contains selenite beams up to thirty-six feet long and three feet wide — the largest natural crystals ever found on Earth. Geologist Juan Manuel García-Ruiz studied how they formed and published his findings in 2007. The answer was stunning in its simplicity and its slowness.

For roughly half a million years, the cave sat submerged in mineral-rich water heated to a steady 136 degrees Fahrenheit by magma below. At that precise temperature, anhydrite dissolved and slowly re-deposited as selenite. The crystals grew at an almost imperceptible rate — roughly the width of a human hair per century. No rushing. No shortcuts. Just the patient, faithful accumulation of one microscopic layer upon another, for thousands upon thousands of years.
