The Cathedral That No One Would Finish
In 1883, Antoni Gaudí took over the construction of La Sagrada Família in Barcelona. He was thirty-one years old. He poured the next forty-three years of his life into this basilica, knowing with absolute certainty that he would never see it completed. The spires he sketched would not rise in his lifetime. The nave he designed would stand hollow for decades after his death.
When critics questioned why he labored so intensely on something he could never finish, Gaudí offered a quiet reply: "My client is not in a hurry."
He spent the final twelve years of his life sleeping in his workshop on the construction site, refining models and drawings for generations of builders he would never meet. He died in 1926. A century later, construction continues still.
This is what the writer of Hebrews means when he says faith is "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Faith is not passive waiting. It is Gaudí climbing the scaffolding every morning, shaping stone for a ceiling that exists only in his imagination and in his trust that the work matters beyond his own seeing.
Some of us are building things we will never finish — raising children whose full lives we may not witness, planting seeds in communities we may one day leave, praying prayers whose answers belong to another generation.
Keep building. Your Client is not in a hurry.
