The Cathedral That Outlived Its Architect

In 1883, Antoni Gaudí took over the design of a church in Barcelona that would become the Sagrada Família. He poured forty-three years of his life into it — redesigning, sculpting, calculating — knowing full well he would never see it finished. When colleagues urged him to hurry, Gaudí reportedly replied, "My client is not in a hurry." His client, of course, was God.

Gaudí died in 1926, struck by a tram on a Barcelona street. At the time of his death, barely a quarter of the basilica was complete. A century later, construction continues. Generations of architects, stonemasons, and engineers have carried forward what one man began in faith, trusting that the work mattered even if the completion date remained somewhere beyond the horizon.

We live in a culture that measures worth by speed. We want results by Friday. We want transformation by morning. But the deepest things — a marriage refined by decades of forgiveness, a child slowly finding their way back to faith, a character shaped by years of quiet obedience — these are cathedrals, not prefab buildings.

James writes, "Let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (James 1:4). God is not in a hurry with you, either. He is building something that will stand. Trust the Architect, even when the scaffolding is all you can see.
